The new testings at ABB LTB 145D1/B circuit breaker

A visit to Southern Electric Networks, the branch of IESK, JSC was organized in order to do our internal ongoing work and to carry out some experiments with the devices’ use on ABB LTB 145D1/B circuit breaker. What is more, standard testing was carried out to obtain parameters of time, speed and travel, as well as to measure the transient contact resistance. After that all the results were provided to Southern Electric Networks employees to be used in the routine circuit breaker operation.

In order to carry out the testings, advanced HV circuit breaker analyzer PKV/M7, high-precision micro-ohmmeter MIKO-21 and manipulating rod were used.

During these works, manipulating rod was used because there was no possibility to use special lifting equipment and elevated platforms. Manipulating rod is designed to connect test cables of various measuring instruments to the bushings of high-voltage equipment up to 5 m high without the use of elevating tools. Manipulating rod allowed us to work with both PKV/M7 and MIKO-21 quickly and easily by connecting the test cables from the ground.

It’s the first time SKB EP engineers worked on this type of circuit breaker. During PKV/M7 operating DP21 transducer and a fastening device from the additional complete set (that is available on order) were used. The measurements were carried out correctly and the testing was successful. However, during the working process it was revealed that the fastening device for transducer installing on this type of circuit breakers should be modified for more convenient user operation. SKB EP design and technology department has planned this work now.

This time PKV/M7 was managed remotely, using a laptop. Users can also work directly through the device interface to carry out the diagnostic. The ABB LTB 145D1/B circuit breaker is new, and has been in operation not for a long time yet, so its parameters respond the passport values.

With the help of MIKO-21 micro-ohmmeter, the contact resistance was measured. These parameters also responded the passport values. It is worth noting that MIKO-21 is the flagship among SKB EP micro-ohmmeters. It is designed for high-precision measurements of DC resistance in the range from 0.1 µΩ to 2 Ω with test current up to 200 A. MIKO-21 is ahead of similar devices on the market due to the number of its functional and technical features. For example, the unique engineering solutions in MIKO-21 allowed to achieve a high measurement accuracy of ±0.05%.

The visit to Southern Electric Networks allowed us to carry out additional works and experiments on the devices operation. That will help us to expand their application scope and to identify dependencies in order to indicate malfunctions of circuit breakers at early stages. SKB EP developers were provided with test results and hopefully the devices’ new functions will be announced soon.
