The device enables monitoring of time, travel, and speed parameters of moving parts of oil-blast, vacuum, air-blast, SF6, and electromagnetic circuit breakers up to 20 breaks as well as monitoring time characteristics of isolators and short-circuiting switches.

Additionally, PKV/U3.0 allows to register instantaneous values of currents and voltages of control electromagnets.

PKV/U3.0 is complete with attachment devices for the installation of measuring transducers on all types of high-voltage circuit breakers (ABB, AREVA, ALSTOM, SIEMENS, etc.).

Adaptability of the instrument involves designing of transducer attachments to the circuit breakers and receiving of transfer function of movement from the shaft to the cross-arm. If an attachment for a linear movement transducer is not provided at high-voltage equipment, you can use angular transducer with corresponding attachment devices instead. The instrument will automatically recalculate angular movement transducer readings to the travel of contacts.

A set for foreign-manufactured high-voltage circuit breakers (ABB, AREVA, ALSTOM, SIEMENS, etc.) is supplied on order.

For instance, the smaller time range of similar instruments does not allow for monitoring the operation of circuit breakers in complex cycles.

There is a number of nuances at measurement performance. For example, while registering of time parameters of any high-voltage circuit breaker is quite a simple process, receiving of travel and speed parameters can be performed only with the use of special linear or angular movement transducers.

PKV/U3.0 is supplied with incremental (discrete) transducers for measurement of speed and travel parameters which do not require adjustment or correction of conversion factors; these transducers provide accurate results and are convenient in service.

Instruments with wire cable-type transducers, for instance, have a limited upper value for speed. Return spring of these transducers does not have enough time to reel the wire rope onto the drum in case of rapid change of speed and measurement results become less accurate. It is not recommended to use laser movement transducers as there is a risk of eye damaging by the laser beam in case of mishandling. In addition, the installation of the laser transducer is made approximately and without clamps. This leads to a high error of the measurements.

In order to get complete and objective information on the state of a high-voltage circuit breaker, travel and speed parameters should be taken by each of its poles.

While performing measurement with one transducer, you have to measure travel parameters of each pole by switching from one pole to another performing three Close / Open operations. However, applying of three transducers simultaneously, which can be done with PKV/U3.0, will allow performing measurement process much quicker as only 1 switching Close/Open operation will be needed.

PKV/U3.0 modification allows simultaneous control in three phases due to the possibility to equip the instrument with additional movement transducers. Standard complete set of PKV/U3.0 includes linear DP12 (1pcs.) and angular DP21 (1pcs.) movement transducers. In order to check parameters in three phases simultaneously one more group of DP12 (2 pcs.) and/or DP21 (2 pcs.) as well as the required tool kit with all necessary accessories is supplied on order.

PKV/U3.0 is a measuring “brain” which performs all necessary calculations. In order to view the results of diagnostics you need to connect the instrument to a portable personal computer (PC) with special software allowing you to view and analyze the obtained results.

The numerical data are displayed on the PC (laptop) monitor in the form of a table with measured and calculated data for each cycle operation (when processing measurement results for complex cycles, the device automatically breaks down the cycle into simple operations).

The tables provide such data as:

  • Travel parameters (full travel, travel to pole contacts closure, penetration, difference of operation in travel, bouncing in travel, overshot, rebound);
  • Time parameters (circuit breaker make time, circuit breaker closing time, pole closing time, time difference of contacts action, bouncing in time);
  • Speed parameters (closing speed).

Along with the tables of digital values of parameters more detailed information on circuit breaker condition can be obtained from the following registered graphs of processes:

  • relation between speed and time, speed and travel;
  • relation between electromagnet currents and voltages, and time and travel;
  • diagrams of contact opening-closing.

Automatic graphical overlay of circuit breaker phase cross-arms movement allows for accurate detection of such major defects as pole mechanism end play. It is particularly important for circuit breakers having one drive for three phases. Such defect cannot be detected using numeric data only. The state of the guide system also cannot be evaluated without viewing the graphs of moving parts movement process. It is also not possible to identify the node contributing to switch off delay using numeric data only. In this case the graph of speed against time of the process also provides comprehensive information as it is possible to separate the time of drive operation and operation time of mechanisms of the circuit breaker itself.

One of the main items subject to diagnostics at air-blast circuit breakers’ (VO-750, VO-1150, VNV-1150, VNV-500-40, VNV-500-65, etc.) operation monitoring is the measurement of nozzle actuator movement parameters (nozzle travel, movement start and end time, etc.).

For the purpose of monitoring of these parameters a rheostat the moving part of which is rigidly attached to the moving part of the drive is screwed into a special drive bore. When drive movement changes, resistance of the rheostat changes as well and this change is recorded by PKV/U3.0.

The cable for 10 variable-resistance circuit breakers is supplied in the standard complete set of the instrument.

PKV/U3.0 is equipped with a power switch for control of switching device drive with solenoid current of up to 35А (direct and alternating) which allows performing both simple switching close or switching open operations and complex cycles "Open-Close", "Close-Open", "Open-Close-Open".

Previously, PKV/U3 was produced in two modifications which differed in the number of channels of movement transducers (1 or 3) and number of channels of variable-resistance transducers monitoring (2 or 12): PKV/U3.1 and PKV/U3.0, correspondingly.

At the present moment, only the advanced modification PKV/U3.0 is being manufactured and available for clients. The instrument includes all the best features and can be used on the HV circuit breakers of all types.

Manipulating rod is designed for test cables connection from the ground or from the tank cover to the bushings of high-voltage circuit breakers, and to the structural elements of high-voltage disconnecting switches and earthing devices, without the use of ladders or elevated platforms.

The manipulating rod is completed with special extension cables. There is a Kelvin clamp with current and potential contacts to connect to the object on one side, and a contact pad on the other side. The device test cable is connected to the contact pad from the ground or a tank cover.

Manipulating rod extension cable is made according to a four-wire (Kelvin) scheme with the test current capacity of 100 A in the presence of a good contact.

    Severstal, PJSC

    Currently two instruments are operated by the Electrical repair production of Severstal, PJSC: HV circuit breaker analyzers PKV/U3.0 and PKV/M7. According to practical evaluation, PKV/M7 is more convenient to operate than PKV/U3.0.

    These instruments we use for high-voltage circuit breakers from 6 to 220 kV.

    As for convenient functions, we need to mention the possibility of measuring angular movement and converting to linear. For example, speaking about one of the last cases, an increased contact time difference between the phases of VGBU-220 HV circuit breaker was revealed.

    Economic effect calculations of using these instruments have not been carried out by our company.

    Taking into account the operating experience of PKV/M7, we can definitely recommend it for use.

    Currently, the following devices manufactured by SKB EP, LLC are used at the substations of the Prioksky EMPN:

    With the help of these devices, all the necessary time and speed characteristics of high-voltage circuit breakers of various types are removed, as well as the transient resistances of the equipment contacts are measured.

    All of the above-mentioned devices are easy to operate, have a compact design and light weight. These features allow them to be used directly at the installation site of the equipment that is being repaired.

    During the operation, the devices have proven themselves to be good in terms of operation and measurement accuracy.

    OJSC ENEX

    The PKV/U3.0 analyzer has been in use in our company since 2012. During this period the analyzer was used during commissioning for testing SF6 circuit breakers of 110, 220, 500 kV manufactured by EMZ, Areva, Siemens, Hyundai. The analyzer is rather convenient in operation and in transportation, interface of the "PKV" software is rather user friendly.

    Up to now we have been used the following functions of the analyzer: Measurement of circuit breaker (CB) operation time; measurement of circuit breaker operation speed; measurement of pole contacts tripping/opening delay; measurement of the time of closed status of CB pole contacts in the CLOSE/OPEN cycle; measurement of time of a contact-free phase in the OPEN/CLOSE/OPEN cycle; measurement of control electric magnets currents.

    Considering friendly operation of the instrument, its functionality, reliability and cost as compared to its analogues, the PKV/U3.0 analyzer can be recommended for use at energy facilities.

    BRANCH OF PAO FSK EES WEST SIBERIAN COMPANY OF MAIN ELECTRIC NETWORKS

    Our company has been using 36 different instruments for more than 10 years, namely: MIKO-1, MIKO-2.3, PKV/M7 that are competed with linear and angular displacement transducers DP12, DP21, PKV/V3А, PKV/U3.0, PKV/U3.1, and PUV-50.

    Those instruments are used for testing different connections of substation equipment, for controlling the parameters of high-voltage circuit breakers and disconnectors of 6-500 kV voltage classes.  The devices are simple and easy to operate. The function of automatic construction of oscillograms following the results of measurements is a great merit of the instruments.

    In the course of the power equipment operation the instruments many times detected different incipient defects thus preventing equipment failures and possible subsequent emergencies.

    Federal Network Company of Single Energy System

    That PAO FSK EES Branch operates the following instruments: MIKO-1 (16 pcs.), PKV/M7 (6 pcs.), PKV/M6 (4 pcs.), PKV/U3.1 (1 pcs.), MIKO-21 (1 pcs.).

    First instruments were procured in 2010. The instruments were used for monitoring and diagnosis of electric equipment at 220 and 500 kV substations.

    MIKO-1 device is rather convenient in use as it is powered from an in-built battery; it has small weight and size. It can be easily connected to any measured equipment owing to cable with clamps of two types. The process is easily controlled, measurements are of high accuracy; capacity of the in-built battery is sufficient for a large number of measurement sessions.

    We used PKV/M6 and PKV/M7 instruments for recording the time and speed characteristics of circuit breakers U-110, MKP-110, U-220, VMT-110, VMT-220, MKP-35, C-35, and of 6-10kV oil circuit breakers. The process of connection and diagnosis is rather simple.

    We recommend PKV/M6 and PKV/M7 instruments to all the companies dealing with maintenance and operation of electric equipment and to electric network companies.

    OJSC Elektrosetservis ENES

    OJSC Elektrosetservis ENES has been intensively using instruments manufactured by SKB EP, namely PKV/U3/M6N, for testing the high-voltage circuit breakers since 2005. The instruments are reliable, convenient in operation and are of practical value. The percent of instruments failure during their operation was minimum, and much lower than that of their analogue SOVA-2.

    Their benefits, in our opinion, are the ability to print time characteristics during circuit breaker oscillography, their simple design, convenient assembly owing to a small number of contact cables and lack of additional units.

Use of this instrument raised the quality of maintenances assessment since design of the instrument allows check of practically every rated parameter of a circuit breaker (time proper of switching on/off; pass in contacts; time delay for contacts closing/reclosing; forcing in; contacts bounce, etc.).

    It should be specially noted that the instrument kit includes a notebook that allows assessment of the maintenance quality immediately after the measurements with the help of curves and diagrams on the screen, and reveals concealed defects of certain parts of a circuit breaker. Ability of the instrument to measure "Open" and "Close" current consumed by electromagnet windings reveals concealed defects in the electromagnet windings.

    One of the advantages of the PKV/U3 instrument is that the number of channels for reading the time and speed characteristics of the VV-500B circuit breaker allows their recoding throughout the pole instantaneously.

    Software of the notebook is user-friendly and at the same time multifunctional. It incorporates all the functions required for reading the time and speed characteristics, particularly: manipulation of PKV/U3 instrument, review of the measurement results in the tabular and graphic (colored) form, storage of the data obtained on a hard disk, creation of a data base of measurements performed, printing out the reports.

    In view of the fact that much attention has lately been paid to assessment of the equipment state for making a decision on its shutdown for maintenance, the use of PKV/U3 instrument for non-destructive testing of internal parts of a circuit breaker reduces the scope of maintenance works and facilitates identification of circuit breakers that need urgent repair.

    CJSC IRKUTSENERGOREMONT

    In 2004 prior to maintenance period our Company procured PKV/U2 instrument manufactured by SKB EP. During the maintenance period of 2004-2006 we performed a large number of repairs of high-voltage circuit breakers and each time for the circuit breaker testing we used PKV/U2 instrument. During maintenances we checked circuit breakers U-220, MKP-110, VMT-220, VMT-110, VKE-10, and VMPE-10.

    In 2006 we decided to procure a new instrument PKV/U3 of SKB EP manufacture for testing the high-voltage circuit breakers VVM-500 and VVD-220 (PKV/U3 is designed for a larger number of tests than PKV/U2).

    During maintenance periods of 2006-2009 we checked MKP-110, U-220, VVM-500, and VVD-220 circuit breakers. In 2008 using the PKV/U2 instrument we checked newly mounted high-voltage circuit breakers GL-317 of AREVA firm.

    PKV/U2 and PKV/U3 instruments are easy to operate as detailed and extended manuals are provided. Connection of the instruments for the circuit breaker test is rather simple. Insulation of control wires is of rather high quality and is provided for different climatic conditions. The instruments are very reliable.

    Simplicity of operation and functionality of PKV instruments are their main merits.

    EKIBASTUZ GRES-1

    In September 2011 we (Ekibastuz GRES-1) procured a PKV/U3.0 instrument for high-voltage circuit breakers testing.

    During operation the instrument demonstrated good performances. It perfectly suits the adjustment of air circuit breakers (VNV-500, VVD-220, VVU-110, and VVG-20) used at Ekibastuz GRES-1 (Ekibastuz Thermal Power plant) as during pre-commissioning tests both discrete and analogue signals should be deenergized. A large number of channels, availability of remote start-up, comparatively small weight and availability of connection circuits for different types of high-voltage circuit breakers facilitate the instrumnet use.

    CJSC "ZETO" - PLANT OF ELECTROTECHNICAL EQUIPMENT

    The PKV/U3 instrument has been used by our Company since 2010. This Instrument allows control of the main parameters of HV circuit-breakers of VGT-110 type during acceptance tests.

    The PKV/U3 instrument is easy to operate; program interface is user-friendly and understandable. We use such functions of the instrument as measuring the rate of the circuit-breaker closing/reclosing, time delays in the phase disconnection, time proper of closing/reclosing, maximum currents of electric magnets during actuation.

    Owing to its convenience, functionality, reliability and relatively low cost as compared to its analogues, the instruments can be recommended for use at energy facilities.
