If attachment of linear movement transducer is not envisaged for high-voltage equipment, you can use angular transducer instead. The instrument will automatically recalculate angular movement transducer readings to the travel of contacts.
A set for foreign-manufactured high-voltage circuit breakers (ABB, AREVA, ALSTOM, SIEMENS, etc.) is supplied on order.
For instance, the smaller time range of similar instruments does not allow for monitoring the operation of circuit breakers in compound cycles.
There are a number of nuances at measurement performance. For example, while registering of time characteristics of any high-voltage circuit breaker is quite a simple process, receiving of travel and speed characteristics can be performed only with the use of special linear or angular movement transducers.
Thus, if the advertisement of the instrument indicates that it can perform monitoring, for instance, of vacuum or oil circuit breakers but no transducer is included in the instrument kit, it means that monitoring of time characteristics only is envisaged.
PKV/U3.0 is supplied with incremental (discrete) transducers for measurement of speed characteristics and travel parameters which do not require adjustment or correction of conversion factors; these transducers provide accurate results and are convenient in service. Instruments with wire rope transducers, for instance, have a limited upper value for speed. Pull-back spring of these transducers does not have enough time to reel the wire rope onto the drum in case of rapid change of speed and measurement results become less accurate. It is not recommended to use laser movement transducers as there is a risk of eye damaging by the laser beam in case of mishandling.
For measurements of speed characteristics and stroke parameters, high accuracy is provided by incremental (discrete) sensors of the type of angular and linear displacement with a resolution of 0.09 ° and 0.5 mm. The accuracy of the measurement of time characteristics is ± 0.1 ms.
Often used in other devices (analogs of the PKV / U3.1 device) potentiometer type sensors have a more (up to ± 1%) error even under normal conditions. For example, with a maximum stroke of 900 mm, such an error gives an uncertainty of ± 9 mm.
The PKV / U3.1 device is an measuring unit. All commands are given to it remotely via a PC (laptop) and special software (software), and the device carry out all the calculations.

Display measurement results in tabular and graphical form;
Automatically calculate switch parameters;

All diagnostic results of the object are displayed on a PC (laptop) monitor in the form of a table with measured and calculated parameters for each cycle operation (when processing the results of measuring complex cycles, the device automatically breaks the cycle into simple operations).
The tables provide data such as:
Stroke parameters (full stroke, stroke to contact closure, stroke, difference of responses along the course, bounce along the course, flight, rebound);
Time parameters (total time of circuit breaker closing, proper time of circuit breaker closing and pole turning on time);
Speed parameters (speed when turned on, contact timing different times and time bounce).
In addition to tables with measured parameters, more detailed information about the state of the circuit breaker can be extracted from recorded schedules, which are operated with cursors, overlays and scaling through special software on a PC (laptop).

For example, the condition of the guide system cannot be estimated without the availability of graphs of the processes of moving moving parts.
In addition, it is difficult to determine from the numerical data which node is the reason for the delayed shutdown time. Here, the graph of the dependence of speed on the time of the shutdown process will give comprehensive information, since it can clearly divide the operating time of the drive from the operating time of the circuit breaker mechanisms.
One of the functions of the software is the automatic overlay of motion diagrams of the traverse phases of the circuit breaker, which makes it possible to accurately recognize such serious malfunctions as backlash of the pole mechanisms. This is especially important for circuit breakers with one drive for three phases. It is impossible to notice such a malfunction using only numerical data.
One of the main characteristics of PKV/U3 is that it is produced in two modifications which differ in the number of channels of movement transducers (1 or 3) and number of channels of variable-resistance transducers monitoring (2 or 12): PKV/U3.1 and PKV/U3.0, correspondingly.
Thereby, PKV/U3.1 allows monitoring of all types of air-blast circuit breakers, except for models VO-750, VO-1150, VNV-1150, which is available in the other instrument version.

OJSC Elektrosetservis ENES has been intensively using instruments manufactured by SKB EP, namely PKV/U3/M6N, for testing the high-voltage circuit breakers since 2005. The instruments are reliable, convenient in operation and are of practical value. The percent of instruments failure during their operation was minimum, and much lower than that of their analogue SOVA-2.
Their benefits, in our opinion, are the ability to print time characteristics during circuit breaker oscillography, their simple design, convenient assembly owing to a small number of contact cables and lack of additional units.
The PKV/U3 Instrument has been used by our personnel since March 2008. Use of this instrument raised the quality of maintenances assessment since design of the instrument allows check of practically every rated parameter of a circuit breaker (time proper of switching on/off; pass in contacts; time delay for contacts closing/reclosing; forcing in; contacts bounce, etc.).
It should be specially noted that the instrument kit includes a notebook that allows assessment of the maintenance quality immediately after the measurements with the help of curves and diagrams on the screen, and reveals concealed defects of certain parts of a circuit breaker. The PKV/U3.1 (PKV/U3.0) instrument for non-destructive testing of HV circuit-breakers has been used by our personnel since July 2008. OJSC MRSK OF URALS has been intensively using instruments PKV-35, PKV/U3, PKV/M5, and PKV/M7 in its production activity.
PKV/M7 instrument has been used since September, 2008. The instrument is convenient is use, has low weight, friendly interface; it allows measurement of parameters of high-voltage circuit breakers 6-110 kV during diagnosis and maintenances. The instruments proved to be efficient for revealing, without dismantling, the deviations from rated parameters of equipment and for identification of the scope of maintenance work.
Graphic presentation of characteristics is rather vivid and gives the required information about the operation of elements and nodes of circuit breakers (drive operation, contact travel momentum, operation of buffers, dynamic time characteristics, etc.) during the whole cycle of measurements and at any time moment. Under availability of the results of previous checks one can get generalized estimates of the equipment condition and life remained. Thus, instrument allows non-destructive testing of circuit breakers, control of several nodes at a time with high sensitivity, and identification of the incipient defects at early stagesю
Still, there is an area for perfection of the instruments, software and manuals. Particularly, use of three linear sensors simultaneously instead of one sensor for recording the characteristics and for determination of time delay in the contact travel would considerably reduce the period of measurements.
On the whole the experience of the instruments operated proved their efficiency in the course of electric equipment maintenance and repair.
In 2004 prior to maintenance period our Company procured PKV/U2 instrument manufactured by SKB EP. During the maintenance period of 2004-2006 we performed a large number of repairs of high-voltage circuit breakers and each time for the circuit breaker testing we used PKV/U2 instrument. During maintenances we checked circuit breakers U-220, MKP-110, VMT-220, VMT-110, VKE-10, and VMPE-10.
In 2006 we decided to procure a new instrument PKV/U3 of SKB EP manufacture for testing the high-voltage circuit breakers VVM-500 and VVD-220 (PKV/U3 is designed for a larger number of tests than PKV/U2).
During maintenance periods of 2006-2009 we checked MKP-110, U-220, VVM-500, and VVD-220 circuit breakers. In 2008 using the PKV/U2 instrument we checked newly mounted high-voltage circuit breakers GL-317 of AREVA firm.
PKV/U2 and PKV/U3 instruments are easy to operate as detailed and extended manuals are provided. Connection of the instruments for the circuit breaker test is rather simple. Insulation of control wires is of rather high quality and is provided for different climatic conditions. The instruments are very reliable.
