The device enables monitoring of time, travel, and speed parameters of moving parts of oil-blast, vacuum, air-blast, SF6, and electromagnetic circuit breakers up to 20 breaks as well as monitoring of isolators and short-circuiting switches time characteristics.

Additionally, PKV/U3.1 allows to register instant values of currents and voltages of control electromagnets.

PKV/U3.1 is complete with attachment devices for the installation of measuring transducers on all types of high-voltage circuit breakers (ABB, AREVA, ALSTOM, SIEMENS, etc.).

Adaptability of the instrument involves designing of transducer attachments to the circuit breakers and receiving of transfer function of movement from the shaft to the cross-arm. If an attachment for a linear movement transducer is not provided at high-voltage equipment, you can use angular transducer with corresponding attachments instead. The instrument will automatically recalculate angular movement transducer readings to the travel of contacts.

A set for foreign-manufactured high-voltage circuit breakers (ABB, AREVA, ALSTOM, SIEMENS, etc.) is supplied on order.

For instance, the smaller time range of similar instruments does not allow for monitoring the operation of circuit breakers in complex cycles.

There are a number of nuances at measurement performance. For example, while registering time characteristics of any high-voltage circuit breaker is quite a simple process, receiving travel and speed characteristics can be performed only with the use of special linear or angular movement transducers.

PKV/U3.1 is supplied with incremental (discrete) transducers for measurement of speed characteristics and travel parameters which do not require adjustment or correction of conversion factors; these transducers provide accurate results and are convenient in service.

Instruments with wire cable-type transducers, for instance, have limited upper value for speed. The return spring of these transducers does not have enough time to reel the wire rope onto the drum in case of rapid change of speed and measurement results become less accurate. It is not recommended to use laser movement transducers as there is a risk of eye-damaging by the laser beam in case of mishandling. In addition, the installation of the laser transducer is made approximately and without clamps. This leads to a high error of the measurements.

For measurements of speed characteristics and travel parameters, high accuracy is provided by incremental (discrete) linear and angular movement transducers with a resolution of 0.09° and 0.5 mm. The accuracy of the measurement of time characteristics is ±0.1 ms.

Often used in other devices (analogs of PKV/U3.1 device) potentiometer type transducers have a more (up to ±1 %) error even under normal conditions. For example, with a maximum travel of 900 mm, such an error gives an uncertainty of ±9 mm.

PKV/U3.1 device is a measuring unit. All commands are given to it remotely via a PC (laptop) and special software, and the device carries out all the calculations.

Special software allows you:

  • Maintain a database of measurement results;
  • Operate the device from the computer;
  • Store measurement templates;
  • Display measurement results in tabular and graphical forms;
  • Automatically calculate circuit breaker parameters;
  • Build graphs and work with overlay tools;
  • Make reports (protocol) of measurements;
  • Print diagnostic data.

All diagnostic results of the object are displayed on a PC (laptop) monitor in the form of a table with measured and calculated parameters for each cycle operation (when processing the results of measuring complex cycles, the device automatically breaks the cycle into simple operations).

The tables provide data such as:

  • Travel parameters (full travel, travel before pole contacts closing, snatch gap, action difference of travel, bouncing in travel, overshot, rebound);
  • Time parameters (circuit breaker make time, closing time of circuit breaker, pole closing time);
  • Speed parameters (closing speed, time difference of the contact action, bouncing in time).

In addition to tables with measured parameters, more detailed information about the state of the circuit breaker can be extracted from recorded graphs, which are operated with cursors, overlays and scaling through special software on a PC (laptop).

The device registers:

  • relation between speed and time, speed and travel;
  • relation between electromagnet currents and voltages, and time and travel;
  • diagrams of contact opening-closing.

For example, the condition of the guide system cannot be estimated without the availability of graphs of the processes of moving parts.

In addition, it is difficult to determine from the numerical data which node is the reason for the delayed opening time. Here, the graph of the dependence of speed on the time of the opening process will give comprehensive information, since it can clearly divide the operating time of the drive from the operating time of the circuit breaker mechanisms.

One of the functions of the software is the automatic overlay of motion diagrams of the traverse phases of the circuit breaker, which makes it possible to accurately recognize such serious malfunctions as a backlash of the pole mechanisms. This is especially important for circuit breakers with one drive for three phases. It is impossible to notice such a malfunction using only numerical data.

PKV/U3.1 is equipped with a power switch for control of switching device drive with a solenoid current of up to 35А (direct and alternating) which allows performing both simple switching close or switching open operations and complex cycles "Open-Close", "Close-Open", "Open-Close-Open".

One of the main characteristics of PKV/U3 is that it is produced in two modifications which differ in the number of channels of movement transducers (1 or 3) and number of channels of variable-resistance transducers monitoring (2 or 12): PKV/U3.1 and PKV/U3.0, correspondingly.

Thereby, PKV/U3.1 allows monitoring of all types of air-blast circuit breakers, except for models VO-750, VO-1150, VNV-1150, which is available in the other instrument version.

Manipulating rod is designed for test cables connection from the ground or from the tank cover to the bushings of high-voltage circuit breakers, and to the structural elements of high-voltage disconnecting switches and earthing devices, without the use of ladders or elevated platforms.

The manipulating rod is completed with special extension cables. There is a Kelvin clamp with current and potential contacts to connect to the object on one side, and a contact pad on the other side. The device test cable is connected to the contact pad from the ground or a tank cover.

    Federal Network Company of Single Energy System

    That PAO FSK EES Branch operates the following instruments: MIKO-1 (16 pcs.), PKV/M7 (6 pcs.), PKV/M6 (4 pcs.), PKV/U3.1 (1 pcs.), MIKO-21 (1 pcs.).

    First instruments were procured in 2010. The instruments were used for monitoring and diagnosis of electric equipment at 220 and 500 kV substations.

    MIKO-1 device is rather convenient in use as it is powered from an in-built battery; it has small weight and size. It can be easily connected to any measured equipment owing to cable with clamps of two types. The process is easily controlled, measurements are of high accuracy; capacity of the in-built battery is sufficient for a large number of measurement sessions.

    We used PKV/M6 and PKV/M7 instruments for recording the time and speed characteristics of circuit breakers U-110, MKP-110, U-220, VMT-110, VMT-220, MKP-35, C-35, and of 6-10kV oil circuit breakers. The process of connection and diagnosis is rather simple.

    We recommend PKV/M6 and PKV/M7 instruments to all the companies dealing with maintenance and operation of electric equipment and to electric network companies.

    OJSC Elektrosetservis ENES has been intensively using instruments manufactured by SKB EP, namely PKV/U3/M6N, for testing the high-voltage circuit breakers since 2005.     KEGOS Central Intersystem Electric Networks, a branch of Kazakhstan Electric Networks Management Company

    The PKV/U3 Instrument has been used by our personnel since March 2008. Use of this instrument raised the quality of maintenances assessment since design of the instrument allows check of practically every rated parameter of a circuit breaker (time proper of switching on/off; pass in contacts; time delay for contacts closing/reclosing; forcing in; contacts bounce, etc.).

    It should be specially noted that the instrument kit includes a notebook that allows assessment of the maintenance quality immediately after the measurements with the help of curves and diagrams on the screen, and reveals concealed defects of certain parts of a circuit breaker. Ability of the instrument to measure "Open" and "Close" current consumed by electromagnet windings reveals concealed defects in the electromagnet windings.

    One of the advantages of the PKV/U3 instrument is that the number of channels for reading the time and speed characteristics of the VV-500B circuit breaker allows their recoding throughout the pole instantaneously.

    Software of the notebook is user-friendly and at the same time multifunctional. It incorporates all the functions required for reading the time and speed characteristics, particularly: manipulation of PKV/U3 instrument, review of the measurement results in the tabular and graphic (colored) form, storage of the data obtained on a hard disk, creation of a data base of measurements performed, printing out the reports.

    In view of the fact that much attention has lately been paid to assessment of the equipment state for making a decision on its shutdown for maintenance, the use of PKV/U3 instrument for non-destructive testing of internal parts of a circuit breaker reduces the scope of maintenance works and facilitates identification of circuit breakers that need urgent repair.

    The PKV/U3.1 (PKV/U3.0) instrument for non-destructive testing of HV circuit-breakers has been used by our personnel since July 2008. During this period all the types of circuit breakers installed at the substations of Federal Network Company that are serviced by Vologda Company of Main Electric Networks have been tested, namely: VVB-220, HPL-220, U-110, and MKP-110.

The instrument is convenient is use, has low weight, friendly interface; it allows measurement of parameters of high-voltage circuit breakers 6-110 kV during diagnosis and maintenances. The instruments proved to be efficient for revealing, without dismantling, the deviations from rated parameters of equipment and for identification of the scope of maintenance work.

    Graphic presentation of characteristics is rather vivid and gives the required information about the operation of elements and nodes of circuit breakers (drive operation, contact travel momentum, operation of buffers, dynamic time characteristics, etc.) during the whole cycle of measurements and at any time moment. Under availability of the results of previous checks one can get generalized estimates of the equipment condition and life remained. Thus, instrument allows non-destructive testing of circuit breakers, control of several nodes at a time with high sensitivity, and identification of the incipient defects at early stagesю

    Still, there is an area for perfection of the instruments, software and manuals. Particularly, use of three linear sensors simultaneously instead of one sensor for recording the characteristics and for determination of time delay in the contact travel would considerably reduce the period of measurements.

    On the whole the experience of the instruments operated proved their efficiency in the course of electric equipment maintenance and repair.

    In 2004 prior to maintenance period our Company procured PKV/U2 instrument manufactured by SKB EP. During the maintenance period of 2004-2006 we performed a large number of repairs of high-voltage circuit breakers and each time for the circuit breaker testing we used PKV/U2 instrument. During maintenances we checked circuit breakers U-220, MKP-110, VMT-220, VMT-110, VKE-10, and VMPE-10.

    In 2006 we decided to procure a new instrument PKV/U3 of SKB EP manufacture for testing the high-voltage circuit breakers VVM-500 and VVD-220 (PKV/U3 is designed for a larger number of tests than PKV/U2).

    During maintenance periods of 2006-2009 we checked MKP-110, U-220, VVM-500, and VVD-220 circuit breakers. In 2008 using the PKV/U2 instrument we checked newly mounted high-voltage circuit breakers GL-317 of AREVA firm.

    PKV/U2 and PKV/U3 instruments are easy to operate as detailed and extended manuals are provided. Connection of the instruments for the circuit breaker test is rather simple. Insulation of control wires is of rather high quality and is provided for different climatic conditions. The instruments are very reliable.

    Simplicity of operation and functionality of PKV instruments are their main merits.
