Peculiarities of vacuum BB/TEL circuit breakers control

High-voltage circuit breakers of BB/TEL type are designed for operation in the indoor and outdoor SG cells, as well as in the one-sided service chambers both during construction and during replacement of obsolete oil circuit breakers.

Unlike conventional oil, vacuum or SF6 circuit breakers, HV vacuum circuit breakers of BB/TEL type consist of two main functional modules: A switch module and a control unit.

Control unit has the following functions:

  • Local and remote control including from a low-voltage additional power source;
  • A standard cycle of vacuum circuit breaker control: "Open" - 0.3 s - "CloseOpen" - 15 s - "CloseOpen" as per GOST 687-78;
  • A Reclosing  Block; power supply from current circuits in case of the supply voltage failure;
  • An option for circuit breaker tripping within 20 s after the supply voltage failure

According to GOST 687-78, the following parameters of vacuum circuit breakers should be tested:

  • Time proper of the circuit breaker closing, that is time interval between giving a command for the open circuit breaker closing and a moment when contacts of a switch module come into contact on all the poles. 
  • Time proper of the circuit breaker tripping, that is time interval between giving a command for the circuit breaker tripping and a moment when the main contacts of a switch module go apart. 
  • Time delay of contacts closing in the switch module, that is time difference of the main contacts closing.
  • Time delay of contacts opening in the switch module, that is time difference of the main contacts opening.

In June 2015 in the course of joint work of specialists of SKB EP and Tavrida Electric (Manufacturer of BB/TEL vacuum circuit breakers) Companies tested speed parameter of BB/TEL circuit breakers using the PKV/M7 instrument.

The PKV/M7 analyzer is designed for testing the condition of circuit breakers of Soviet, Russian and foreign manufacture (ABB, Areva, Siemens, Alstom et al.). It ensures control of speed and travel parameters of oil, vacuum and SF6 circuit breakers, recording of time characteristics of HV circuit breakers, of isolating switches and short circuiters. It allows measurement of currents and voltages of magnets, and of high currents of solenoids. The instrument is well-reputed on the market, which is proved by a large number of positive references from its users.

Control of vacuum circuit breaker of BB/TEL type with a switch module ISM15_Shell_1 and the control unit БУ/TEL-12-01A

Control was performed on the vacuum circuit breaker of BB/TEL type with a switch module ISM15_Shell_1 and the control unit БУ/TEL-12-01A. For measuring the parameters of this circuit breaker operation the following accessories are supplied together with the PKV/M7 (upon order):

  • Resistive voltage divider 35/12V for connecting to dry contacts of a control unit of a circuit breaker. It is a new product developed relatively recently specifically for time characteristics control of vacuum circuit breakers of BB/TEL type.
  • A cable for voltage measurement by Analog Input channel (SKB026.19.00.000). For measuring the 0 ÷ 12V voltages. The cable is needed for connecting the voltage divider to a channel of A/D converter. 

In the course of measurement the data presented on the graphs taken from PC software for PKV/M7 were obtained.

Speed parameters of the ISM15_Shell_1 switch module of the vacuum BB/TEL circuit breaker that were recorded by the PKV/M7

According to specification of BB/TEL circuit breaker manufacturer the normal operating conditions of a vacuum circuit breaker with a switch module ISM15_Shell_1 and control unit БУ/TEL-12-01A are assumed to be as follows:

  • Time proper of tripping: not to exceed 23 ms. According to PKV/M7 data, the tripping time made 20.6 mc.
  • Time proper of switching on: not to exceed 40 ms. According to PKV/M7 data, the switching on time made ≈ 39.6 mc.
  • Contacts closing delay: not to exceed 4 ms. According to PKV/M7, it was ≈ 1.2 ms
  • Contacts opening delay: not to exceed 3 ms. According to PKV/M7, it was ≈ 0.4 ms

In the course of tests the results of HV circuit breaker control of BB/TEL type using the PKV/M7 were obtained; pilot tests of using the new instrument for controlling the speed parameters on the circuit breakers of indicated types were performed.

According to references of PKV/M7 users, the instrument reduces both the measurement time (the measurement takes 5-10 minutes) of a circuit breaker, and a number of operations needed for testing. For this reasoning SKB EP, the Manufacturer, recommends recording the time characteristics of vacuum circuit breakers every time the circuit breaker is tested or maintained.
