The device measures time, travel, and speed parameters of the moving parts of SF₆, oil, vacuum, and electromagnetic circuit breakers rated from 6 to 500 kV simultaneously across 3 poles and up to 6 breaks per pole, as well as the time parameters of isolators and short-circuiters.
The following measurements and operations can be performed simultaneously:
Response time measurement for main contacts and pre‑insertion resistors;
Current analysis of closing and tripping coils up to 30 A;
Measurement of station voltage up to 350 V DC and AC;
Displacement measurement using angular and linear displacement transducers.
PKV/M17 enables reliable measurement of the time, electrical, and kinematic characteristics of circuit breakers, ensuring effective diagnostics of their technical condition.

PKV/M17M enables to measure the time parameters to closing / opening of the controlled contacts, isolators, and short-circuiters – simultaneously across 3 poles (up to two breaks per pole) or across 1 pole (up to 6 breaks per pole), in the range from 0.01 to 200 seconds at intervals of 0.05, 0.1, and/or 1 second.
In addition to monitoring time parameters, the PKV/M17M measures speed (up to 20 m/s) and travel (up to 900 mm) parameters of moving parts of circuit breakers using incremental (discrete) and rheostatic transducers.
In standard complete set:
Linear displacement transducer DP12 – for measuring the displacement of moving parts in high-voltage circuit breakers. Range – 1 - 900 mm. Resolution – 0.5 mm, accuracy ±1 mm.
Angular displacement transducer DP21 – for measuring the angle of shaft turn in high-voltage circuit breakers. Measuring range – 0 - 360°. Resolution – 0.09°, accuracy ±0.56
In additional complete set (on order):
Rheostat transducer DP32 – for measuring the linear displacement of vacuum circuit breakers with open insulated housing in the range 0.2 - 20 mm. Accuracy ±0.2 mm.
Note: When the device is equipped with three transducers of the same type, speed and travel parameters can be monitored simultaneously across 3 poles.
Depending on the task, the user can choose between an internal triggering method or one of the external triggering methods:
Based on the state of any auxiliary contact channel;
Based on the state of any pole channel;
Based on the setting of an analog channel (voltmeter channel, current measurement channels, current clamp channels);
Based on the status of the incremental displacement transducer.
PKV/M17M instrument is complete with attachment devices for the installation of measuring transducers on all types of high-voltage circuit breakers (ABB, AREVA, ALSTOM, SIEMENS, etc.).
If any specific attachment devices or measurement templates are required for your object, we are ready to participate in their development, manufacture and testing.
This ensures correct connection of the device and accurate measurements, even for equipment with a non-standard design.
PKV/M17M is equipped with a control module to operate both DC and AC switching devices, enabling both simple single operations and complex cycles at electromagnet currents of up to 30 A.
PKV/M17M uses a control module to conduct endurance tests of circuit breakers during commissioning and maintenance.
This mode involves repetitive testing of the switching device with automatic recording of its characteristics after a specified number of cycles. This allows users to assess the circuit breaker’s mechanical and electrical durability, as well as its performance during long-term operation.
This mode is one of the unique features of the new PKV/M17M,
which assesses the actual operating condition of a high-voltage circuit breaker after a long period of inactivity.
The function simulates an actual emergency trip (or scheduled shutdown) following a prolonged period of inactivity. This mode allows users to identify changes in the characteristics of the drive mechanism and switching system that may occur during prolonged operation or when the equipment is stored without use.
The position and operating timing of the circuit breaker are determined using current clamps. There is no need to connect directly to the main contacts or control circuits. This method provides safe and convenient testing, allowing to obtain reliable data on the circuit breaker's real operating condition.
This feature is currently under development. For devices purchased in 2026, the feature can be activated remotely via a software update without returning the device to the manufacturer.
PKV/M17M checks the operation of the circuit breaker’s automatic trip-free mechanism under a simulation of critical operating conditions.
The trip-free mechanism check function is designed to evaluate the circuit breaker’s ability to reliably open at any point during the closing process, including emergency situations.
The trip-free mechanism ensures that the circuit breaker opens regardless of the position of the moving contacts. This is particularly critical during short-circuit closing: when the protections are triggered, the circuit breaker must be guaranteed to open and not remain in the closed or intermediate position.
Control is carried out along the travel path of the moving contacts during closing – from the moment the primary circuit closes until full closure.
The test results confirm that the opening parameters comply with the requirements of the Electrical Installation Code regarding current and trip time, which ensures safe and reliable operation of the circuit breaker during overloads and short circuits.
PKV/M17M has a specialized test mode designed to check the correct operation of the circuit breaker's anti-pumping mechanism while maintaining the closing signal.
This function prevents repeated automatic reclosing attempts when a steady signal is present, such as in the case of a short circuit.
During the test, the operation of the blocking mechanism is checked
to ensure that it prevents cyclic operation of the actuator when the close signal remains active.
The test confirms that the anti-pumping protection operates correctly, thereby preventing damage to the circuit breaker and ensuring safe operation of the equipment.
The object diagnostic results are displayed as data with measured and calculated parameters for each operation of the cycle. When processing measurement results for complex cycles, the device automatically breaks the cycle down into simple operations.
The results include such data as:
Travel parameters: stroke, travel until pole contacts closing, contact wipe, pole discrepancy, bouncing in travel, overtravel, rebound.
Time parameters: circuit breaker opening time, circuit breaker closing time and pole closing time, time difference in contact response, and bouncing in time.
Speed parameters: closing speed, and speed calculations for different sections.
Using special templates, the user can specify the nominal values for the measurement object. If the measured value differs from the nominal value, the device will highlight it.
More detailed information on the circuit breaker status can be derived from recorded graphs, that are navigated using cursors and scaling.
