A new solution of SKB EP to measure the resistance of wagon wheel pairs

SKB EP company, as one of the market leaders in the production of instruments and components for convenient and functional diagnostics of high-voltage equipment, presents a special development for measuring the electrical resistance of the wheels tyres (rims) of wagon wheel pairs.

The instrument was created as a response to a request from a railway company seeking for a more convenient and faster way to check the condition of wheel pairs.

CHALLENGES: Traditional methods of measuring the electrical resistance of wheel pairs are accompanied by the use of bulky clamps, the need for preliminary surface cleaning and difficulties in fixing contacts, which make the measurement process effort and time-consuming.


SOLUTION: A special device – contact blocks manufactured by SKB EP, considering the listed intricacies, implements a simple and effective solution that meets the requirements of GOST 31536-2012 "Wheel pairs for the traction railway stock. Method of measuring electrical resistance" and provides convenient diagnostics.

Contact blocks are small "technical blocks" in a set of 2 pieces with a contact conductive surface and banana type connectors. They are easily installed on the surface of the wheels of the wheel pair and securely fixated with a powerful magnet that is located inside.

Advantages of the instrument when measuring the resistance of wheel pairs:

  • Easy operation: the blocks are easily installed on the surface of the wheel pairs.
  • Reliable fastening: the force of pressing the contacts to the surface of the wheels is 35 to 40 N for a flat surface and over 40 N for a rounded surface, which ensures reliable fastening and measurement accuracy (according to GOST 31536-2012 (p. 4.3.4) – the force of pressing the contacts to the surface shall be at least 30 N).
  • Sufficient measurement range: the upper limit of measurement is up to 15 mΩ, which allows measurements within a sufficient range.
  • High conductivity of the test current: depending on the measured resistance, the blocks provide current carrying capacity of 1 A to 200 A.

    The new solution is designed to be used with micro-ohmmeters and winding resistance meters manufactured by SKB EP. For MIKO-10, a special measuring cable is recommended – SKB045.15.00.000 (length 5 m) or a set of cables SKB048 .08.00.000/-01 (2 x 2.5 m). In addition, cables for MIKO-21 (2 x 2.5 m) and MIKO-7M(A), MIKO-8M(A) and MIKO-9A winding resistance meters can be adapted on request.

    The contact blocks were successfully tested. The results correspond to GOST (Russian National Standard) "Traction railway stock wheel pairs of 1520 mm gauge railways" (p. 4.3.15): "The electrical resistance of the wheels tyres (rims) of wagon wheel pairs shall be 0.01 Ω maximum."
